The Brains Behind the Operation: Agile Leadership in Transforming a Legacy Neurosurgical Website

Project Objective:

Transform a legacy website in the field of neurology with hundreds of articles, videos, and PDFs and modernize the technology stack.

Framework / Methodology:

Agile; one-week sprints

Project Management System:

Teamwork

Constraints:

Quality

Risks:

The largest risks involved in this project were the fluid nature of stakeholders’ decisions regarding requirements, overturning design decisions that would have negatively impacted the quality outcome of the project. The team also experienced key stakeholder turnover multiple times throughout the project.

Outcome:

Julie successfully led a transformative 14-month project to revamp a neurosurgery-focused website. The initiative entailed a complete redesign of the user interface (UI), modernization of the back-end technology stack, and improved accessibility for professionals and students in the neurosurgery field. Needless to say, the stakes were high from the start.

From the outset, communication among internal and external stakeholders was a significant hurdle. Julie faced stakeholders who were demanding and resistant to change despite the value that the end product would provide the organization and its end users, making alignment on objectives a daunting task. However, she remained steadfast, patient, positive, and committed to fostering collaboration, reinforcing accountability, and reiterating the value and WHY behind those decisions to help keep the project on track. Through meticulous documentation, consistent updates, and clearly defined action items, she created a framework to reduce miscommunication and maintain progress. Her ability to mediate between the often contentious stakeholder group and her development team became a cornerstone of the project’s eventual success.

Throughout the process, Julie’s unwavering professionalism and attention to detail earned her respect. Stakeholders—despite their initial skepticism—came to appreciate her “always-on” work ethic, optimistic approach, and ability to keep the project on track. Her leadership inspired her development team to deliver innovative solutions under challenging conditions, while she deftly navigated the complexities of shifting priorities and occasional conflicts. By fostering a culture of accountability and trust, she kept everyone focused on the ultimate goal.

All in all, Julie and the teams made it to launch. Now live and accessible, the website provides an invaluable resource to the global neurosurgery community, equipping medical professionals, students, and organizations with the tools and resources they need to improve surgical procedures and save lives.
